KPCL began its Commercial Operation with Unit I on October 13th, 1998 at its plant in Goalpara, Khulna. The plant has a generation capacity of 110 MW and was commissioned within 11 months. By doing so it became the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) in the private sector in the country. Nineteen (19) highly efficient, furnace oil (HFO) fired Wärtsilä Finland 18V32 engines installed on two barges moored in a lagoon work in unison to crank out an impressive 110 MW of electricity on a continuous basis. The project was financed by IFC and World Bank. The local EPC works of the project was carried out by Neptune Commercial Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of United Group. With an initial power supply agreement of 15 years, which was later extended for a further 5 years term, with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the project was developed on a build, own & operate basis. The project consists of building 132/11 KV substation, a pump house, fuel storage tank of 15000 tons, oil tanker berthing jetty including a man-made lagoon for placement of barges.
KPCL Unit II, a Furnace Oil (HFO) fired 115 MW power plant, has been built beside the existing Khulna Power Company Ltd in Goalpara, Khulna. With contract for the supply of electricity on Rental Basis with an initial term of 5 years signed with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on 23rd June 2010, its Commercial Operation began on 1st June 2011. The term of the Contract was extended for a further 5 years due to excellent operational record during its first tenure. The power plant consisting of seven (7) Wärtsilä Finland 18V46 engines have been in operation at their full capacity since its commissioning. Completed in a span of 9 months, the works included the construction of 132/11 KV electrical substations and complete fuel oil handling facilities with Fuel tanks along with the main plant and machinery. The total EPC works was accomplished by Neptune Commercial Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of United Group.
KPCL Unit III, previously known as Khan Jahan Ali Power Company Ltd. (KJAPCL), entered into a contract with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on 25th July 2010, for the supply of electricity on Rental Basis for initial term of 5 years followed by a renewal of term for 5 more years. With the plant located in Noapara, Jessore, KPCL III went into Commercial operation on 29th May 2011. Its Furnace Oil (HFO) fired five (5) Wärtsilä Finland 20V32 engines produce a combined output of 40 MW. Built within a span of 9 months, the works included the construction of 33/11 KV electrical substations and complete fuel oil handling facilities with Fuel tanks along with the main plant and machinery. The total EPC works was accomplished by Neptune Commercial Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of United Group.
