UIU started its academic program in October 2003 in a rented building. UIU shifted to its very own custom-built campus in September, 2005. The new campus was built with the purpose of imparting education in a befitting infrastructure and congenial environment.
UIU offers and array of undergraduate and graduate courses under the following departments:
1.     School of Business & Economics
2.     School of Engineering & Science
3.     Institute of Natural Sciences
4.     English Language Institute

UIU fosters research. UIU is the 1st private university in Bangladesh to disburse 1 crore taka as research grant among its faculties for 31 difference research project. UIU's research team is one of the foremost in the country, having made a telling contribution in the renewable energy research sector of Bangladesh, particularly in solar based power generation.

UIU welcomes students from all across the country, and has an place intensive scholarship and financial aid programs through which meritorious students are awarded up to 100% tuition waiver depending on their academic performance.
UIU has earned a global recognition in recent years. UIU has signed MoU with University of Ulster, Northern Ireland – UK, University of New Brunswick – Canada, University of Texas & Texas Southmost College – USA, Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York – USA, University of Bradford – UK and University of Lumiere Lyon 2 – France in order to provide facilities for UIU students such as transfer of credits as well as different areas of cooperation.
UIU is now gearing up to move to its brand new permanent campus, under construction at Satarkul (3 km east of American Embassy), sprawling over an area of 25-bigha of land.
UIU's mission is not just to remain as another participant in the sea of private initiatives for higher education in Bangladesh, but also to be a major player in the development and dissemination of knowledge, research and technology in Bangladesh.
